William
J. Brennan, Jr., a United States Supreme Court
Justice, was born on April 25, 1906, and lived
in Washington, D. C. with his wife. In September
1956, he was appointed to the Supreme Court to
succeed Justice Sherman Minton. In 1968, Mrs.
Brennan saw something in their front yard. Upon
investigating the object, Justice Brennan and
his wife found a baby blanket, a Browning 20
gauge shotgun in a case and twenty-four shells.
He later received a letter addressed to him reading "It
is too bad that the shotgun you found was not
used on you and your family." It was later determined
that the gun belonged to a neighbor and apparently
had been lost or discarded after a burglary of
the neighbors home. In 1988, Justice Brennan
was one of three Supreme Court Justices' and
a Federal Judge who received a death threat.
Justice Brennan received several more threats
over the years.
