Saddam Hussein served as president of Iraq from 1979 until 2003. In March of 2003, the U.S. and its allies invaded Iraq, eventually deposing Hussein. He was captured by U.S. forces on December 13, 2003, then tried and convicted of charges relating to crimes against humanity by an Iraqi special tribunal. Hussein was executed in December of 2006.
